Robert Aitken, Jan Junker and Jesse Martins … three talented and charismatic individuals … will make your masterclass experience a memorable one. Working together, you will be treated to a musically uplifting and rewarding event.
When you attend a Aitken masterclass, you get Robert Aitken … full time, all day and into the evening. He leads the group exercises with innovative ways to get better air flow, longer breathing, faster tonguing. He works individually with each active participant on solo repertoire of his/her choice in the masterclass setting while talking with the entire group about the work and how to approach it. He selects chamber music for the participants, puts together the ensembles and coaches them on the work.
“Robert Aitken is likely one of the best (if not THE best) clinician alive today! So, if you are in a position to go to this [attend a masterclass], then you really, REALLY should go! I took one of my students to a rare clinic he did here in his own home town of Toronto last year and, after ALL of the clinics he had ever attended (here, at the NFA, etc.), he was absolutely flabbergasted!”
~ Bill McBirnie, Extreme Flute
“Bob has heard everything that has been written in the last 50 years and played most of it, so there’s a huge database inside that brain of his that is very, very important.”
~ Burt Wathen, Artistic Director, Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance
“In my estimation what sets Mr. Aitken apart is his unswerving commitment to not only performing, composing and conducting, but to sharing his knowledge with students around the world. He has taught Master Classes in many countries, including Cuba, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the US. He has held a number of teaching and musical director positions, including the post of professor at Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik in Freiburg, Germany.”
~ Don McLean, Ph.D, Dean, Faculty of Music, University of Toronto

Jesse Martins, Pianist
In a Robert Aitken masterclass you are treated to the finest of accompanists … someone who works with the active participants before they perform in front of the group, prepares with you for the final concert and performs with some of the chamber ensembles.
Jesse Martins has dedicated much of his professional career working as a collaborative pianist in his home country Brazil. He has also played extensively in New Zealand, England and the United States. He currently holds the position of Music Director of the Youth Opera for Sarasota Opera, Florida. His sensitive and lyrical playing refused lects his keen appreciation for music in song … an excellent partnership for flutists. He holds a Master of Arts in Collaborative Piano from Mansfield University (PA), and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brazil). SCHEDULE [Download Daily Schedule]
Masterclass Sessions. (Six 4-hour sessions; one 2-hour session). The masterclass sessions are in two parts: group exercises and solo performances / coaching.
Group Exercises. The sessions start with everyone, both active participants and full-course auditors, discovering innovative ways to improve air, sound, intonation, etc. You work through uniquely designed exercises which Bob has developed over the years. These can take your playing to a new level as advanced flutists.
Solo Performances / Coaching. Each active participant performs for the group, followed by gentle, encouraging ideas for getting even more out of the piece. These sessions are fluid so that individual needs and the group’s preferences shape the experience. Performance selections are identified in advance so that attendees can bring their own sheet music to make notes.
Chamber Ensembles. (Six 2-hour sessions). Every active participant will play in a chamber group with pieces selected by Aitken. During the evening rehearsals, Bob will visit each, offering coaching comments to enhance the performance.
Concerts. There are two concerts during the masterclass, both for the attendees and the public. The first is a Recital with Robert Aitken and Jesse Martins. Featured works range from the Baroque and Romantic periods to 20th Century and New Music. The masterclass ends with a second concert on stage of the Glenridge Performing Arts Center with the Active Participants performing solo or ensemble works. Robert Aitken and Jesse Martins will also perform.
1. Sarasota Bay Cruise and Dolphin Watch. The warm water of the Sarasota Bay is home to dolphins and manatees. Active participants and Auditors (full course) will be treated to a two-hour cruise on the bay, being on the lookout for these wonderful animals, sometimes even seeing mothers with their babies. It’s a delightful afternoon. Hot food and drinks are available on the boat for purchase.
2. Siesta Key, Breakfast on the Beach. Siesta Key has been voted the #1 beach in the USA. Understandably so because of the miles of super soft, white glistening sand, beautiful horizon and warm water with a broad shelf for wading, floating, swimming safely. Active participants and Auditors (full course) will be treated to a catered breakfast at the beach on Sunday morning so everyone can say their final goodbyes and enjoy the sun.
Dinners With Bob. Five evenings after the masterclass and before the chamber music rehearsals, we’ve planned dinners out with Bob. Everyone is invited to come. We’ve selected a variety of special restaurants nearby so that you have a chance to talk with Bob and enjoy fine food. Each person pays for their own meal, so you can choose the faire and the fare (food and price) to fit your desires.

HOTEL AND MEALS
Both the hotel accommodations and meals separate from the tuition. In order to make it the most affordable for you, we have arranged a special rate in a very nice hotel, located in proximity to both The Glenridge Performing Arts Center and many restaurants and fast food establishments.
HOTEL. The Comfort Suites (a new establishment at 5690 Honore Avenue, Sarasota, FL 34233) offers an extra-large room, divided into two parts with either two Queen beds or one King. The rate includes a full, hot breakfast. You make the reservations on your own by calling (941) 554-4475. Mention that you are part of the Robert Aitken Flute Masterclass. Rates: Single: $87. Double: $43.50/night. If you want a roommate, tell reservations and let us know as well. We’ll make sure you have someone to share the room.
NOTE: One of the very special reasons we like our arrangement with the Comfort Suites is management’s delight to have us there. They’re reserving a block together so that practicing flute in the room, at all hours of the day, is fine with them. They also have a large community area in the hotel for congregating over a glass of wine … and an outdoor pool and Bar B Q pit area for getting together. Bob will be staying at the hotel as well so that he has a chance to get to know all of you.
MEALS. BREAKFAST is included with the room. (Hot food). There are microwaves and refrigerators in the room, along with a boutique store in the lobby that offers entrees. LUNCH is on your own before the masterclass begins at 1 pm. There are numerous fast food and regular restaurants within a half-mile radius.
